First Steps to Becoming a Toteger

I suggest you start and keep a Toteger Diary and keep the answers to the following questions, and your observations, in it. This is just a starting place. You should continue beyond the numbers I suggest and add to each section as you discover new things. Start with just one observation, and add to it from time to time. Work slowly. You may want to keep this up for the rest of your life.

Observe your local geography. What is your locale like? What is the earth around you like? How did it get that way? What natural phenomena (rivers or streams, ocean, hills, mountains, planes, forest, prairie, etc.) lies closest in each direction away from where you live? What is your climate like year round? What spiritual lessons can you learn from it?

Observe the local plant life. What plants, trees, weeds, flowers, herbs, etc. grow naturally/are native to where you live? Set a goal to learn to identify at least 10 of them. What is their life cycle? What do they do during the different seasons? What spiritual lessons can you learn from them?

Observe the local wildlife. What wild animals, birds, insects, etc. inhabit where you live? Set a goal to learn to identify at least 10 of them. What are their life cycles? What are their behavior patterns? What do they do during the different seasons? Again, what spiritual lessons can you learn from them?

What do you know about your own family history? Trace your own family tree back to your Great Grandparents. If you are adopted and do not know who your natural parents are then do this with your adoptive family.

Set aside time at least once per week to do your own Toteg Tribe style ritual. After making the Offering, spend some time in meditation about one of your observations above. Keep a record of the images, feelings, and thoughts that came to you during your meditation.
