Glossary of Toteg Tribe Terms

Constantly being revised as we grow and understand our growth better.

  • Circle: The basic group of two or more people gathered together for ceremonial, ritual, or religious purposes, usually led by a Doyen, Sacar, or Circle Leader.
  • Circle Leader: A person who is doing on-the-job-training to become a Sacar.
  • Clan: A division of the Tribe consisting of two or more Septs, and lead by a Clan Doyen.
  • Coterie: A group of two or more tribal members and visitors who meet regularly for religious, ritual, or ceremonial purposes but who are not lead by a person who is a Circle Leader, Sacar, or Doyen. Any member of Toteg Tribe may form a Coterie.
  • Docent: A senior or Master Visar.
  • Doyen: A person who is the senior member and spiritual leader of the Tribe or of a Clan of the Tribe.
  • Guild: A formal association of specialists formed to establish and maintain standards. Examples might be The Doyen's Guild or the Visar's Guild (Neither of which presently exist).
  • Lore: Our accumulated spiritual knowledge and traditions regarding the Earth Mother, Sky Father and local gods, goddesses, and spirits. Some Lore is relevant to the Tribe as a whole, but the Lore of one Clan will necessarily be different from the Lore of another clan since they are in different locations on the face of the Earth Mother. There is Lore that is common to all, then Lore that is specific to Clans and branching from there Lore that is specific to other circles. Even though they may be relatively close different areas will have Lore about the spirits of different valleys, or streams, or forests, or hills, or cities, etc., around them. There is also lore that is specific to different families - ancestor spirits, and other spirits that stay within a family that is not necessarily relevant to any other group.
  • Mentor: Usually an ordained Sacar or Doyen who is responsible for personally tutoring and advising a Circle Leader during their training for the priesthood. Also a Docent responsible for tutoring apprentice Visars. This position presupposes that the person is already skilled in the job that they are teaching. It's not a formal office but is a formal responsibility. Technically any skilled person may enter into a Mentor/Protg relationship with a lesser skilled or unskilled person.
  • Protg: A person who is being trained in some specialty by a Mentor.
  • Sacar: (Sacar, from the Latin, "sacer", one who makes sacred. Pronounced SAY-ker) A person who has completed training, been ordained by a Doyen, and who is the spiritual leader of a Sept. A Sacar performs all religious and spiritual ceremonies on behalf of the people including worship services, marriages, funerals, consecrations, provides spiritual teaching and guidance, hears confessions, and in general does any and all of the functions of a spiritual leader in any other religion.
  • Sept: A division of a Clan, consisting of two or more people, led by a Sacar.
  • Tribe: Our over all social organization consisting of individuals, Clans, Septs, Circles, and Coteries.
  • Visar: (pronounced "VIS-are" with the i as in "is") A person who is skilled in the arts of divination and spell casting, and also enters into a trance state in which the s/he travels to Other Worlds in order to diagnose, heal, learn the causes of and solutions to problems, guide souls, deal with spirits of various kinds, etc, when necessary. A member of the clergy may also be a Visar, but a Visar is not necessarily a member of the clergy.
